I really wanted to accomplish this by the time I turned 30 but never found my way down to Georgia to get started. I really wish I had been able to take a couple of long weekends though. During my time in the Boy Scouts (yes I am an Eagle Scout), I hiked many parts of the trail and love being out in the woods. I would eventually like to hike the entire Appalachian Trail over the course of my life and this would be a great start.
The total mileage for this trip would be 456 miles. Broken down, 75 miles of the trail is Georgia, 88 miles is North Carolina and then the final 293 miles skirts across the Tennessee/North Carolina border.
The largest obstacle to completing the goal is going to be time. It is going to be a large undertaking to consistently get back to various points along the trail especially when the trail-heads can be as much as six hours away from home. Without taking too much time off, my best hope is to drive out on a Friday after work, stay in a motel and hit the trail hard Saturday morning through Sunday afternoon.
I would also love for people to hike parts of this with me. I am not looking for anyone to hike the entire thing with me, but would love it if at various points during the trip, different people or groups of people would join me on my journey through God’s beautiful landscape.
