As it stands right now, I am carrying quite a bit of debt. Most of it is not bad debt. But regardless I would like to have it all paid off. I left certain exceptions to my debt, namely a mortgageĀ and/or a new car. Currently my car is only four years old but by the time I reach 40, it will be 14 and in that span, it is not unreasonable to get a new car (though I truly hope mine lasts). I hope I can afford to buy a house and quit renting.
I am carrying some credit card debt that increased when I was out of work but already have a plan to pay those off. I have a car loan that I picked up when I was working two jobs and making good money. At the time I had a plan to pay it off in three years but it is now looking like I will be paying the life of my five-year loan. I also have three student loans between undergrad and graduate school.
So, how much debt are we talking? Again, the majority is monthly, low-interest payments and not irresponsible debt. But, it while it is less than $100,000 it is more than $20,000. And I want it ALL paid off by the time I turn 40. This will require living within my means, continuing my monthly payments, finding a way to earn more money, and trying to pay extra to pay down things faster. I can definitely do it, I just have to be diligent.
