Every year the State Fair comes to Raleigh North Carolina. And every year I have something on my plate that prevents me from going, which is less preferable than the corn dogs and funnel cakes I could be having on my plate if I went to the state Fair instead.
Back when I was a toddler, the World’s Fair came to Knoxville, TN when I was living there. There are rumors I went but I have yet to find pictures proving it. Regardless, I have not been to a large scale fair since. I have enjoyed some of the smaller fairs because it is enjoyable to wander the booths while eating some of the most unhealthy food in the world.
I can’t honestly explain in practical terms why I added the State Fair to my list. Perhaps because there are less excuses not to go than there is to go and I still haven’t gone. Perhaps fairs bring out nostalgia in me. Perhaps I enjoy the reminder that America has a history of fairs traveling from small town to small town. Maybe it is only for the people watching. I don’t know but I do know that I want to go, I want to eat bad-for-me food until I can’t move, I want to visit the booths with arts and crafts, see pig races and watch people from near and far. Thus, the State Fair is on my list.
I was at the World’s Fair in Knoxville too! =) Somewhere there’s a pic of me on dad’s shoulders & I still have the World’s Fair t-shirt he was wearing in the pic. Hmm…I should figure out a way to frame them together.
FYI: there’s also the NC Mountain State Fair near Asheville, if you need an alternative.
