Growing up in Atlanta during the 90s, the rap culture was all around. For me it started with MC Hammer and local favorites Kris Kross. But it quickly evolved into the stylish and varied beats of Outkast, Mos Def, Dr. Dre, Common, The Roots and others. I have been to a lot of concerts for bands that I love but I have never been to a rap concert.
My musical tastes have been always been eclectic but I have been to a live show for nearly every genre of music except rap. The thing is, when the rap is good, it is actually one of my favorite genres of music. I am not sure why I have not been to a rap concert. I will admit that race probably does play a factor. Not in the sense that I do not want to be around other types of people but rather that as a white, middle class, male I fear I would look out-of-place and be judged.
Still, I want my love of the music and beats to override my self-image and allow myself the freedom to be around other people who love the same music.
